The first full cover (front cover illustration) of Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師) in Monthly Shōnen Gangan (月刊少年ガンガン) appeared on the January 2002 issue (2002年1月号). This issue featured the series on the cover along with lead color pages for chapter 6 (“The Right Hand of Destruction”). It is widely described as the first full cover appearance for the manga (earlier issues had the series inside, starting with its debut in the August 2001 issue, but not on the front cover).
